June is the start of summer, and there are plenty of holidays to look forward to. While you might be thinking about the most popular ones, like the Fourth of July, there are plenty of other fun ways to celebrate smaller holidays too! Here are some of our favorite June national holidays that you can celebrate with the senior citizens in your life.
While October marks Family History Month, Family History Day takes place on June 14. This is a great activity for many seniors and families, as it gives them the opportunity to reminisce and you the opportunity to learn more about your loved one’s life. There are many different tools available through websites like Ancestry.com so that you can map out your family tree and even connect with relatives.
The North American Nature Photography Association designates June 15th as National Nature Photography Day. This day is a great way to enjoy beautiful nature photography that other people have taken, as well as get outside and take some pictures of your own. Elder abuse is a serious problem that does not just take place in healthcare or senior care environments. Two of the most delicious holidays of the year are in June, National Fudge Day on June 16th and National Ice Cream Soda Day on June 20th. The Baltimore area has a storied history of great ice cream shops and pharmacies that offered delicious treats, and you can visit one with your loved one, make fudge or ice cream sodas at home, or simply reminisce together about great places you’ve been.
Juneteenth takes place on June 19th, and it commemorates the end of slavery in the US. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed much earlier and the Civil War ended weeks earlier, this date recognizes when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and shared the news that the Civil War had ended. Maryland has many different Juneteenth celebrations including festivals, parades, and more. Look at the events your loved one might like here.
